Bethesda's Starfield initially featured planned gore and dismemberment mechanics, but these were ultimately removed due to technical constraints. Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who contributed to Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of integrating these mechanics with the game's space suits proved insurmountable. The intricate details involved, such as realistic helmet removal and the interaction with suit components, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting system as excessively complex. The evolving character creator and the ability to significantly alter body size further compounded these difficulties.
While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of these features—especially considering their presence in Fallout 4—Mejillones argued that the mechanics are more fitting for Fallout's humorous tone. He stated that the gore and dismemberment contribute to Fallout's playful style.
Despite this omission, Starfield, Bethesda's first major single-player RPG in eight years, has achieved remarkable success, attracting over 15 million players since its September 2023 release. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's expansive RPG elements and satisfying combat as key strengths.
Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer shed light on the game's extensive loading times at launch, particularly noticeable in Neon. Bethesda has since addressed various issues, including implementing a 60fps performance mode and releasing the Shattered Space expansion.
