Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite
Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting industry veterans from titles like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its first original game: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for Steam and Epic Games Store early access release in Spring 2025, promises a unique blend of tactical combat, destructible environments, and challenging moral dilemmas.
Wartorn follows two elven sisters on a perilous quest to reunite with their family. Their journey unfolds across a fractured, chaotic world, demanding both strategic prowess and difficult choices. The game's core gameplay loop centers around real-time strategic battles interwoven with the narrative, creating a story-driven roguelite experience.
Dynamic Destruction and Moral Choices Define Wartorn's Gameplay
Wartorn's chaotic nature extends beyond its fractured world. Physics-driven environmental destruction ensures no two playthroughs are identical. Players will strategically utilize this dynamic environment to their advantage, adding a layer of unpredictability to combat encounters.
Beyond the battlefield, players face tough decisions with lasting consequences. Choices like rationing resources or making life-or-death calls directly impact the narrative and subsequent gameplay. This element further enhances the replayability and depth of the roguelite experience.
The game's magic system provides another layer of tactical depth. Players can creatively combine elemental forces (fire, water, lightning) to exploit enemy weaknesses and environmental hazards, adding strategic nuance to combat.
Painterly Aesthetics and Accessible Gameplay
Wartorn's painterly art style creates a visually striking and dramatic world. To ensure accessibility, the game includes a feature to slow down the action, allowing players to issue precise commands amidst the chaos. The progression system incorporates upgrades that carry over between runs, making each attempt a little easier while retaining the challenging core gameplay loop.
Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist states, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us." This sentiment encapsulates Wartorn's ambition to deliver a compelling and thought-provoking experience alongside its engaging gameplay. The game is set to launch in early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
