Microsoft's evolving multiplatform strategy is evident in its recent Xbox showcases, which now prominently feature PlayStation 5 logos alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass branding for select titles. This shift marks a departure from previous showcases, such as the June 2024 event, where PS5 announcements were often delayed or omitted from initial reveals. The inclusion of PS5 in recent showcases, however, is not universal across all game announcements.
This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's continued focus on platform exclusivity in their marketing. Recent showcases from both companies avoided mentioning competing platforms, even for multiplatform titles. For instance, games shown at State of Play only highlighted PlayStation platforms, despite also releasing on other consoles and PC.
Xbox head Phil Spencer, in an interview with XboxEra, explained the rationale behind this change. He emphasized the importance of transparency and ensuring gamers know where to find Microsoft's games. While acknowledging the differences between open and closed platforms, Spencer reiterated his belief that game accessibility should be prioritized. He anticipates this approach will continue, with future showcases potentially including Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside PlayStation 5.
This suggests that future Xbox showcases, including the anticipated June 2025 event, may feature titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty with prominent PS5 branding alongside Xbox. However, Sony and Nintendo are unlikely to reciprocate this level of cross-platform promotion.
