Minecraft, the iconic sandbox game, marked its 15th anniversary last year, and despite entering its teenage phase, developer Mojang remains committed to the original rather than pursuing a sequel. During a visit to Mojang's Stockholm studio, IGN delved into the possibility of a sequel for the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with a humorous yet definitive statement: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."
While a sequel, Minecraft 2.0, is not on the cards, the survival-crafting phenomenon is set to continue evolving. Mojang's vision extends far into the future, with ambitions to at least double the game's current lifespan. "We've existed for 15 years," Garneij remarked. "We want to exist at least 15 years more, so Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that."
Mojang's drive to innovate builds upon the game's solid foundations, though these are showing signs of age. Garneij acknowledged the challenges this presents, especially with no plans for an engine overhaul. Implementing new content, like the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update, takes time due to the game's 15-year-old technology. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," Garneij explained. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]."
Despite these hurdles, Minecraft remains a global phenomenon with no indication of waning popularity. Mojang has no plans to shift Minecraft to a free-to-play model or integrate generative AI technology. So while Minecraft 2 isn't in the pipeline, fans can rest assured that the original game will continue to receive updates and improvements.
