The Warhammer 40,000 community was taken aback by the surprise announcement that development of Space Marine 3 had begun, just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. This news, shared by publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive in mid-March, stirred concerns about the future support for Space Marine 2, given the rapid announcement of a sequel.
In response to these concerns, both companies released a detailed blog post, reassuring fans that Space Marine 2 remains a priority. They emphasized that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of support for Space Marine 2. No teams are being shifted from Space Marine 2 to the new project, and the commitment to delivering exciting content for Space Marine 2 remains strong.
Space Marine 2’s year one roadmap is still in place, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. Excitingly, players can look forward to a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. The developers hinted at additional surprises that even dataminers haven't discovered yet, adding an element of mystery and anticipation.
The announcement of Space Marine 3, described as being years away from release, was met with enthusiasm from the community. This support has motivated the developers, who expressed their gratitude and reaffirmed their commitment to Space Marine 2.
The new class addition to Space Marine 2 has sparked speculation among fans, with many hoping for the introduction of the Apothecary, a class akin to a medic in the Space Marines. There is also excitement about the possibility of a Librarian class, which would bring warp-powered space magic into the gameplay. As for the new melee weapon, fans are eager for the inclusion of the iconic axe from Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, a weapon that modders have already attempted to implement themselves.
The green light for Space Marine 3 was not entirely unexpected, given the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following the launch of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at potential story DLC and floated ideas for Space Marine 3. He mentioned that game director Dmitry Grigorenko had proposed story ideas that could serve as either DLC or a sequel, suggesting a rich narrative future for the series.
