In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.
Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.
Free Orpheus or Side with the Emperor?
This decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to the Astral Prism for), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, granting the party an advantage against the Netherbrain. However, Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to potentially ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might still become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. He'll even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; choose Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's choice may alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
Moral Considerations:
The "good" choice depends on perspective, but loyalty is key. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, prioritizing Voss and Lae'zel's desires could be seen as overly demanding. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might result in Mind Flayer transformation, but it's a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, allowing for outcomes beneficial to all.
