Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has stirred excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel is in the works. While not a direct confirmation, his recent actions strongly imply a "spiritual successor" to the iconic game is on the horizon.
A Poll and a Potential Sequel
Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) presenting two game concepts: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a spiritual successor to Minecraft. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response seemingly prompted Notch to declare he had "basically announced Minecraft 2."
He clarified that he's serious about developing one of these projects, expressing a willingness to tackle a Minecraft-inspired game. However, he acknowledged the legal complexities involved, as Microsoft owns the Minecraft IP since its 2014 acquisition of Mojang. Notch emphasized his respect for Mojang and Microsoft, assuring fans he wouldn't infringe on their work.
Challenges and Anticipation
Notch expressed concerns about the inherent challenges of creating a spiritual successor, noting that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these reservations, he's motivated by fan demand and the potential for another successful title.
While awaiting Notch's potential new creation, fans can anticipate the upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as the release of the "Minecraft" live-action movie later in 2025.
