WWE 2K25: A Solid Evolution, But Not a Revolution
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement strategy with WWE 2K25. Promised additions include a new online world ("The Island"), revamped modes (Story, General Manager, Universe), a fresh match type ("Bloodline Rules"), and more. However, a recent preview event focused primarily on the core gameplay (largely unchanged) and the updated Showcase Mode.
The Showcase Mode, centered on The Bloodline, offers a fresh approach: recreating, creating, and altering historical matches. Experiencing these variations – recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring win, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering Roman Reigns' 2022 Royal Rumble encounter with Seth Rollins – proved engaging and showcased improvements over previous iterations.
While the over-reliance on real-life footage ("Slingshot") from previous Showcase Modes persists, progress has been made. In-engine recreations of key moments replace lengthy real-life clips, resulting in a smoother, more immersive experience. These sequences are also shorter, minimizing time away from gameplay control. However, complete control was still relinquished during the Nia Jax match's conclusion, a missed opportunity for player agency.
The checklist system, a source of past criticism, remains but is refined. Optional timed objectives reward players with cosmetics without penalizing failure, a significant step forward. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout feature, adding replayability and a unique perspective for dedicated fans.
Core gameplay largely mirrors WWE 2K24, retaining the successful grappling mechanics. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game adding strategic depth to the opening grapple sequences. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optionally disableable, along with other quick-time events.
Weapon throwing, a highlight from WWE 2K24, returns with expanded environments and a wider weapon selection. Backstage brawls now take place in locations like the WWE archives, offering a nostalgic and engaging setting. The inclusion of Prime Hydration bottles as weapons adds a humorous touch.
A significant addition is intergender gameplay, finally allowing players to pit male and female wrestlers against each other. Combined with the largest roster to date (300+ wrestlers), this opens up numerous match possibilities.
A new match type, "Underground," a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque environment with lumberjacks, was briefly showcased. Further details will be revealed in upcoming IGN First content.

While WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with incremental improvements, its revolutionary potential remains to be seen. The unpreviewed features may ultimately define its success, but based on the preview, it appears to be a refined iteration of an already strong wrestling game.
