Wizards of the Coast has recently issued a DMCA takedown notice for a fan-created mod titled "Baldur's Village," which integrated characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the popular game Stardew Valley. This action came shortly after the mod received public praise from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who lauded the mod's creativity and the love poured into its creation.
The "Baldur's Village" mod, which was released earlier this month, quickly gained attention and appreciation from the gaming community, including Vincke, who tweeted, "So much love went into this - amazing work!" However, the mod's availability was abruptly halted due to the DMCA notice from Wizards of the Coast, the company that owns the rights to Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate.
In response to the takedown, a Nexus Mods spokesperson expressed hope that the decision might be an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, which often relies on external agencies to monitor IP infringements. The spokesperson stated, "Hopefully, this is an oversight from WotC, who often use external agencies to hunt down violating content, and they will revert their decision. Fingers crossed for Baldur's Village."
Sven Vincke has since taken to Twitter again to address the situation, reaffirming his support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He commented, "Protecting your IP can be tricky but I do hope this gets settled. There are good ways of dealing with this." Vincke emphasized the value of fan mods, stating, "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth. Imho they shouldn't be treated like commercial ventures that infringe on your property."
The takedown might be part of a broader strategy by Wizards of the Coast to protect the Baldur's Gate IP, especially following announcements at the recent Game Developers Conference about upcoming plans for the franchise. It remains to be seen whether this action against the Stardew Valley mod was a deliberate move or a mistake that could be reversed. Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the matter.
