Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. The team discussed their creative process, the evolution of the faction from its "Inferno" concept to the final "Swarm" iteration, and the unfolding narrative within the Jadame continent.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by enemy unit levels; the greater the disparity, the more potent the damage. Others, such as mantises, strategically select from three distinct abilities each round. Creatures like worms and locusts exhibit a unique regenerative capacity, consuming corpses to heal and enhance their power – a skill also learnable by player heroes.
In Olden Era, the insectoid race, previously only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8, assumes the role of the demonic threat. While respecting established lore, the developers incorporated elements of body horror and occultism, transforming the Swarm into more than just an insect colony; it's a cult dedicated to a singular overlord. Each member functions as part of a vast hive mind, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players for utilizing exclusively Swarm units due to their synergistic enhancements. Swarm troops can summon cocoons, their health directly tied to the army's overall size. These cocoons hatch into temporary larval units, providing strategic adaptability on the battlefield.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is highlighted by its corpse-devouring healing and empowerment, coupled with abilities that dynamically adjust based on enemy strength. This fosters a direct confrontation strategy, offering players a novel and engaging combat experience.
