Stardew Valley: A Comprehensive Guide to Friendship
Forging strong bonds with the residents of Pelican Town is crucial in Stardew Valley. Whether your goal is friendship or romance, cultivating relationships is key to thriving in this charming farming simulator. This guide details how to maximize your friendship levels with every villager.
Updated January 4, 2025, to reflect the 1.6 update. While the core friendship mechanics remain the same, some additions in 1.6 are highlighted below.
The Heart System
Access your relationship status with each NPC via the in-game menu's heart tab. This shows your friendship level with each character in hearts. Reaching certain heart levels unlocks special events, mailed recipes, and unique dialogue. However, the heart display only shows the result; understanding point values is essential for strategic friendship building.
Friendship Points: The Foundation
Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Almost every interaction – talking, gifting, etc. – impacts your friendship score. Positive actions earn points, while neglect or negative actions decrease them.
Boosting Friendship Gains: Friendship 101
For a permanent 10% boost to friendship point gains, acquire the "Friendship 101" book. This can be won from the Prize Machine (9th prize) in the Mayor's Mansion or, with a 9% chance, purchased from the traveling Bookseller (Year 3 onwards) for 20,000g. The book only affects point gains, not losses.
Interaction Point Values
Several interactions affect your friendship score:
- Talking: +20 points (or +10 if the character is busy). Daily conversation prevents friendship decay (-2 points per day). Ignoring a villager after giving them a bouquet increases this decay to -10 points per day, and -20 for your spouse if married.
- Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 points with the recipient.
- Gift Giving:
- Loved Gifts: +80 points
- Liked Gifts: +45 points
- Neutral Gifts: +20 points
- Disliked Gifts: -20 points
- Hated Gifts: -40 points
- Special Occasions: Gifts given on the Feast of the Winter Star receive 5x points, while birthday gifts receive 8x points.
Exceptional Gifts: Stardrop Tea
Stardrop Tea (+250 points, or one heart) is a universally loved gift. On birthdays or the Feast of the Winter Star, it grants 3 hearts! Sources include the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, the Helper's Bundle (remixed Community Center), and high-level Raccoon requests.
Movie Theater: Invite NPCs with a Movie Ticket (1000g). Movie and concession choices affect points:
- Loved Movie: +200 points
- Liked Movie: +100 points
- Disliked Movie: 0 points
- Loved Concession: +50 points
- Liked Concession: +25 points
- Disliked Concession: 0 points
Dialogue Choices: Careful responses to villager questions can yield +10 to +50 points, or decrease friendship if poorly chosen. Heart Events offer similar opportunities for significant point gains or losses.
Festivals and Events:
- Flower Dance: Dancing (4 hearts or higher) grants +1 heart.
- Luau: Soup contributions affect friendship levels with all villagers.
- Community Center: Completing the Bulletin Board bundles rewards 500 points (2 hearts) with each non-dateable villager.
By understanding these mechanics and utilizing the strategies outlined, you can build strong and lasting relationships in Pelican Town. Happy farming!
