The next chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog saga is on its way! Paramount Pictures has slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a March 19, 2027 release, according to Variety. This announcement comes two years after the release of the highly successful Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The anticipation is palpable, especially considering Sonic the Hedgehog 3's impressive box office performance: a domestic haul of $218 million and over $420 million worldwide. This makes it the highest-grossing Sonic film to date, significantly surpassing the first film's $148 million. This success is particularly noteworthy given the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the iconic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the silver screen.
The live-action Sonic franchise continues to expand, boasting three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off streaming series. The films, based on the beloved Sega games, follow Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each installment introduces more iconic characters, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally bringing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) into the mix.
While Sonic 3 hinted at the next character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a surprise. For a detailed look at the new characters and a review of Sonic 3, check out our dedicated guides.
