The co-op horror game, R.E.P.O., released in February, has quickly gained popularity, boasting over 200,000 PC players. But will this chilling experience make its way to consoles? Let's dive in.
Will R.E.P.O. Come to Consoles?
Currently, there are no plans for a console release of R.E.P.O., and it may remain a PC exclusive. Developer semiwork hasn't indicated any intention to port the game to consoles. Their current focus is on refining the game's multiplayer experience on PC.
The primary hurdle is combating cheaters. Implementing a robust anti-cheat system presents a challenge, as it would also disable player-created mods, a feature the developers wish to preserve. As the developer stated (via PCGamer), "The main issue with matchmaking lobbies is hackers. But the issue with an anti-cheat system is that you’re ruining the experience for everyone who has made mods, because mods don’t work with an anti-cheat system. And we don’t want that.” This issue needs resolution before even considering a console port.
While some PC-only titles, like Mouthwashing, have transitioned to consoles, it's worth noting that Mouthwashing is a single-player game, simplifying the porting process significantly. Similarly, Lethal Company and Content Warning, previous games from the same developer with comparable gameplay, remain PC exclusives. Last year, console release for Content Warning was considered but ultimately stalled due to technical difficulties. Since then, there have been no further announcements.
Therefore, the answer to whether R.E.P.O. will come to consoles is currently no. The developer is prioritizing the improvement and stability of the PC multiplayer experience before exploring other platforms.
