Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide
Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system based on the original game's Expedition League. This guide details Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the associated passive skill tree.
Understanding Expeditions
Four major endgame events populate the PoE 2 Atlas: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. Expedition map nodes are identified by a light blue, spiral-shaped icon on the Atlas. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter on a chosen node.
Entering an Expedition reveals an area marked by various symbols and a tent housing one of four NPCs. The core mechanic involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events:
- Red Markers: Detonating Explosives near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage from monsters but higher item rarity from chests).
- Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Detonating Explosives near these spawns Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-tier gear.
The Explosives UI shows the area of effect (AoE). For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles when placing Explosives. After placement, activate the Detonator to initiate the event. Death resets the map, but players can strategically retreat and return later.
Expedition Pinnacle Maps and Olroth
Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These are used with Dannig in your hideout to access Expedition Pinnacle Maps – significantly larger events with triple the Explosives. These maps may contain Olroth, a powerful boss indicated by a skull on the minimap.
Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and a chance at unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth spawning.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances the event. Points are earned primarily by defeating Olroth. The tree features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks. Each Notable node requires increasing the Logbook difficulty.
Notable Passive Nodes:
Notable Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% | N/A |
Disturbed Rest | 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains 50% faster | N/A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, albeit riskier, gains. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the drastic reduction in Explosives.
Expedition Rewards
Primary rewards are Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for gear:
Artifact | Vendor | Gear Type |
---|---|---|
Broken Circle Artifact | Gwennen | Weapons |
Black Scythe Artifact | Tujen | Belts & Jewelry |
Order Artifact | Rog | Armor |
Sun Artifact | Dannig | Used to acquire other Artifacts |
Exotic Coinage | All Vendors | Inventory Refresh |
Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are crucial for progressing the Pinnacle system and facing Olroth.
This guide provides a comprehensive overview of PoE 2's Expedition system, empowering players to maximize their rewards and conquer the challenging endgame.
