The temporary US shutdown of TikTok on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption, lasting approximately 24 hours, highlighted the political risks associated with ByteDance's ownership.
While Marvel Snap is now back online, full functionality, including in-app purchases, remains under restoration. To mitigate future disruptions stemming from TikTok's uncertain regulatory future – a 90-day extension to sell a 50% stake to a US entity is currently in place – developers are exploring a publisher change and internalizing some services, as announced on X (formerly Twitter).
The abrupt service interruption, without prior warning, caused significant player frustration, particularly concerning in-game purchases made before the lockout. While PC users via Steam remained unaffected, many experienced authorization problems.
Second Dinner Studios, the game's developer, expressed surprise at the event and assured players via an official X statement: “Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.” Further details are promised.
