Suikoden is back, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set for a free-to-play release later this year. While a release date remains unannounced, anticipation is high.
For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, originally created by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami since 1995, is a collection of RPGs loosely based on the Chinese novel Water Margin. Known for its intricate political storylines, True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny, the series boasts eleven entries (including spin-offs), with the last main installment released in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or full-fledged revival, Konami is offering Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile game experience.
What Awaits in Suikoden STAR LEAP?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while retaining the series' signature gathering of 108 heroes. The game features pixel art, preserving the classic Suikoden aesthetic. See for yourself:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, embarks on a journey with Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression), Shirin (his childhood friend with a strong sense of justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler) after a devastating attack on their village. Their quest: to restore peace.
Mixed reactions from the community are understandable. Longtime Suikoden fans have eagerly awaited a proper continuation, and the announcement of STAR LEAP, a gacha game, has understandably sparked debate.
Further details will emerge closer to the game's launch. Visit the official website for the latest updates.
