Rockstar Games' latest release, *Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced*, launched on March 4, has not been warmly received on Steam, garnering a 'mixed' user review rating. With only 54% of the 19,772 user reviews being positive, this version of GTA 5 is underperforming compared to the original, which boasts a 'very positive' rating, despite being unlisted and unsearchable on the platform at Rockstar's request. In fact, *GTA 5 Enhanced* holds the dubious distinction of being the lowest-rated GTA game on Steam, even falling below *Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition*, which sits at 66% positive reviews.
This new iteration, available as a free upgrade for PC owners of GTA 5, introduces features previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of *GTA Online*. These include access to Hao’s Special Works for the latest vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, and the option to purchase a GTA+ Membership, alongside enhanced graphics and quicker load times. Players can migrate their Story Mode and Online progress to this updated version. However, the process of account migration has been riddled with issues, contributing significantly to the negative feedback.
Frustrated players have reported problems with migration, with one review stating, "‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’" and expressing strong dissatisfaction with the requirement to potentially restart their gameplay. Another user highlighted the arbitrary nature of account migration restrictions and the unhelpfulness of Rockstar's support team, while a third lamented the prospect of losing over a decade of progress for marginal improvements.
Despite the negative reviews, *GTA 5 Enhanced* continues to attract a large player base on Steam, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 since its launch. However, the rocky start has raised concerns among the PC gaming community about the potential launch of *Grand Theft Auto 6*, especially given its planned release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025, with no immediate plans for a PC version. A former Rockstar developer has tried to reassure PC gamers, asking for patience and understanding regarding the staggered release strategy.
In related news, Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, is taking legal action against PlayerAuctions for selling unauthorized GTA 5 content, while Rockstar has also acquired and renamed the developer behind *Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition* to Rockstar Australia.
