PlayStation Productions at CES 2025: A Wave of Game Adaptations
At CES 2025, PlayStation Productions made a splash, announcing several new game adaptations slated for release in 2025 and beyond. The announcements, made on January 7th, included anime, movies, and a new season of a popular series.
Among the highlights:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime: Crunchyroll and Aniplex are teaming up to bring a Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime series to screens in 2027. Takanobu Mizumo will direct, Gen Urobuchi will handle story composition, and Sony Music will contribute the soundtrack.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures will respectively produce film adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2. Details on these projects remain scarce.
-
Until Dawn Film Adaptation: A film adaptation of Until Dawn is set for release on April 25, 2025.
-
The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann revealed a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, which will adapt elements from The Last of Us Part II, introducing characters like Abby and Dina.
PlayStation Productions' Track Record:
This isn't PlayStation's first foray into video game adaptations. While earlier adaptations like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, while commercially successful, received mixed critical reception. PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, has had more success with titles like Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023), both box office hits. The Twisted Metal series (2023) on Peacock, while less critically acclaimed than The Last of Us, completed production on its second season in late 2024.
The Future of PlayStation Adaptations:
Beyond the CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions continues work on adaptations of Days Gone, an Uncharted sequel, and a God of War TV series. The success of these recent and upcoming projects strongly suggests that more PlayStation franchises will likely see adaptation in the future.
