CES 2024 showcased a stunning array of gaming laptops, revealing several key trends shaping the future of portable gaming. The sheer diversity of designs was striking.
A Diverse Landscape of Gaming Laptop Designs
While gaming laptops have always offered a variety of styles, this year felt different. Brands like Gigabyte and MSI are blurring the lines between productivity and gaming, pushing high-end laptops to offer more than just raw power. This translates to a wider range of aesthetics. Laptops like the Gigabyte Aero series exude sleek elegance, suitable for even the most professional environments. Conversely, machines like the MSI Titan 18 HX AI Dragonforged Edition proudly display their gaming pedigree with bold graphics.
RGB lighting remains a staple, with manufacturers showcasing innovative implementations. Wrap-around lighting rings, illuminated mechanical keyboards, and even trackpad lights were abundant. The Asus ROG Strix Scar series particularly impressed with its AniME Dot Matrix LED display, capable of dynamic text and animations. While not revolutionary, expect a blend of familiar form factors—from large and powerful to thin and light—alongside exciting new design elements.
The Rise of AI Assistants
AI integration in laptops gained significant traction last year, but implementations often felt underdeveloped. This year, several vendors demonstrated more sophisticated AI assistants capable of controlling PC settings without manual intervention. One MSI representative showcased an AI assistant that automatically optimized performance settings based on the specified game. While promising, the actual speed advantage over manual adjustments remains to be seen. Further testing will determine the true utility and offline capabilities of these systems.
Mini-LED, Rollable Screens, and Other Innovations
Mini-LED technology is finally making a significant impact. Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte all unveiled Mini-LED gaming laptops with high-end specifications and pricing. These laptops boast over 1,100 local dimming zones, resulting in reduced blooming, enhanced contrast, outstanding brightness, and vibrant colors. While OLED still holds an edge in contrast, Mini-LED’s lack of burn-in risk and higher sustained brightness make it a compelling alternative.
Other notable innovations emerged. The ASUS ROG Flow X13 returned with USB4 eGPU support, eliminating proprietary connections. Asus showcased it paired with a new eGPU featuring up to an RTX 5090. Lenovo, however, stole the show with the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, the first notebook with a rollable OLED display. Its 14-inch screen expands by 2.7 inches with the push of a button. While the initial design might seem unconventional, and durability concerns exist, it represents a significant step forward in display technology.
The Continued Dominance of Ultrabooks in Gaming
Ultrabooks are increasingly prevalent, even within gaming lines. Major manufacturers now offer thin, light, and premium gaming Ultrabooks, often prioritizing minimalist aesthetics. Gigabyte's revamped Aero series exemplifies this trend. These laptops cater to users who don't require maximum settings in the latest games, offering excellent portability and productivity alongside gaming capabilities. As demonstrated by the Asus TUF Gaming A14, adding a dedicated graphics card to these machines remains possible.
Furthermore, adjusting settings allows users to bypass the higher cost of dedicated graphics cards. Modern AMD and Intel processors deliver surprisingly good gaming performance, aided by features like AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and Intel XeSS. Cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now also provide compelling alternatives, allowing for enjoyable gaming experiences without a dedicated gaming laptop.
