Become Aran de Lir, a blacksmith and warrior whose life takes a tragic turn, igniting a quest for vengeance. Discover a magical hammer, granting access to the Forge of the Gods, where you'll craft extraordinary weapons to challenge Queen Nereia's formidable army. Prepare for a 60-70 hour adventure.
Journey through a breathtaking yet brutal fantasy world teeming with magical creatures—enchanted forests and vibrant fields are home to trolls, elementals, and more. The game's distinctive visual style, reminiscent of Blizzard's work, features exaggerated proportions: colossal characters, imposing structures, and a monumental environment that exudes grandeur. Encounter unique enemies, including stocky soldiers reminiscent of Gears of War's Locust.
Blades of Fire boasts an unparalleled weapon modification system and innovative combat mechanics, setting it apart from typical action games:
Forge your destiny through a deep crafting process. Begin by selecting a basic weapon template, then customize its size, shape, material, and other attributes to fine-tune its performance. Conclude creation with a mini-game, precisely controlling the force, length, and angle of your strikes to determine weapon quality and durability. For convenience, instantly recreate previously forged weapons.
Develop a strong bond with your creations. The game encourages using the same weapons throughout your journey; death means leaving your weapon behind, retrievable upon returning to the location. Carry up to four weapon types, switching seamlessly. Each weapon offers unique stances (slashing, thrusting, etc.). Forget looting—you'll craft every weapon. Seven types are available, from halberds to dual axes.
Master strategic combat through directional attacks. Target the face, torso, left, or right, exploiting enemy weaknesses. Some bosses, like trolls, possess an additional health bar vulnerable only after severing a limb—disarm a club-wielding arm or blind them by destroying their face. Stamina, vital for attacks and dodges, doesn't regenerate automatically; hold the block button to recover it.
Reviewers acknowledge potential shortcomings: limited content, uneven difficulty, and a sometimes-unintuitive forging mechanic. However, the unique setting and combat system largely compensate.
Blades of Fire launches May 22, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Epic Games Store).
