Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release in Spring 2025. Dive in to discover the exciting features and updates coming to Civ 7.
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will be exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, marking the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming. The announcement was made on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event by 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Dennis Shirk, the Executive Franchise Producer for Civ 7, expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on the 2K website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, echoed this excitement, highlighting the timing of Civ 7 VR's release alongside the Meta Quest 3S. With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
It's worth noting that while Civ 7 is available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be coming to PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table, offering an immersive experience reminiscent of a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to admire the details of buildings and units or take a bird's-eye view to strategize their next move. The game supports both virtual and mixed reality, allowing players to switch seamlessly between modes. In virtual reality, players find themselves in a museum overlooking a vista tailored to their chosen leader, while in mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment.Civ 7 VR offers diverse gameplay modes including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. Up to four players can participate using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, with the option to include AI-controlled opponents. Players can team up with friends to conquer AI foes or compete against each other as iconic world leaders. To play online, players need both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has been actively responding to player feedback gathered during Civ 7’s early access phase. Announced via their official X (Twitter) page, the team is committed to addressing the issues highlighted by players. Civ 7’s Advanced Access, available to those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition, began on February 6, 2025. The game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with players particularly noting challenges with the User Interface, which made accessing key gameplay information difficult.
In response, Firaxis Games has outlined their plans for future updates, prioritizing UI improvements. Their focus includes making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and refining formatting. Additionally, they are working on community-requested features such as adding teams to multiplayer games and expanding map variety. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, which will address UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crises adjustments, and further bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though an exact date has not been specified.
