Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a significant shift in focus towards their next project, initiating a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's full attention is now dedicated to crafting a new game.
Reflecting on their journey, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, took to Twitter to express nostalgia and excitement about the future. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke teased, hinting at more to come from the studio. In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed their shift in focus, emphasizing their commitment to their next title, which is neither a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 nor a Dungeons & Dragons game.
Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

Vincke has previously hinted at the studio's next big game, expressing enthusiasm about pushing boundaries without revealing specifics. In November 2023, he mentioned that the new project would be a departure from their previous work, aiming to innovate and challenge the team creatively.
Additionally, Vincke has confirmed plans for a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series, although it won't be the next project. Speaking to IGN in July 2023, he emphasized the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3, highlighting the dedication of the 400 developers who poured their hearts into the game.
With Larian exploring new horizons, fans speculate about the nature of the upcoming game. Could it venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps a new genre entirely? While the wait might be long, the promise of innovation from Larian Studios is certainly something to look forward to.
