The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads reveals key information.
Confirming fan speculation, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi stated the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted, and Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed, that the trailer's protagonist is indeed the great god Amaterasu.
While a sequel was anticipated, the team addressed the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, which starred Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Hirabayashi acknowledged mixed fan reception to Ōkamiden, citing both its platform and the absence of key original team members. He clarified that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.
Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflicts and challenges.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in very early development, with the early announcement driven by excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates are some time away.
